Ringkøbing-Skjern: Energy 2020

The Municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern holds the ambitious goal of becoming 100% self-sufficient with renewable energy by 2020. A detailed plan on how to achieve this is the basis for nominating the municipality as a finalist for the Nordic Energy Municipality recognition.

The project, Energy 2020, consists of an energy account which calculates the total energy consumption within the municipality's geographical area and an ambitious plan to ensure that this energy consumption is covered by renewable energy by 2020.

Among the plan's pioneering elements is the development of a new concept for biogas. Large farms will produce the gas and send it via 200 kilometres of transmission net to the local cogeneration plant. Here, the gas is converted into power and heat. Other large gas consumers will also receive gas from the transmission net. Part of the project is the development of a special type of biogas plant which is constructed to deliver gas to the new transmission net. In order to meet the total energy consumption, the plan also comprises a number of other measures, including:

  • The construction of more than 30 wind turbine groups with a total of 160 large wind turbines and a planned production of 450 MW
  • The erection of the world's secondlargest solar thermal plant
  • Extensive energy saving measures and the implementation of renewable energy measures in existing and new buildings
  • The implementation of various energy saving transport projects.

"Why transport fossil energy halfway around the globe, when we ourselves can produce renewable energy in our own backyard? This is one of the central questions raised in this project. Out of local resources from wind, soil, sun and water, we plan to save energy and produce 10 petajoule of renewable energy per year. This corresponds exactly to the energy consumption by all citizens and companies throughout our municipality. And it means that by the year 2020, Ringkøbing-Skjern will be 100 % self-sufficient with renewable energy". - Mayor Iver Enevoldsen, Municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern
