Danish Architecture Guide

At the construction site just opposite Europa Plads (The European Square) situated at the landward side of the Grenå-railroad, you'll see intense activity. For several years, construction of Dokk1 has been going on, but Aarhus will soon be fortified with a Main Library and the citizen service centre. It'll therefore be open for everyone going to borrow books, get a new passport, attend a lecture or just enjoy a cup of coffee.

The idea of a new Main Library and, with it, Dokk1, emerged in 1999 when Aarhus Municipality organised a competition in order to get suggestions for some new applications of Aarhus' local harbour areas. The winners of the competition were architects Knud Fladeland and Peer Teglgaard Jeppesen; both with a plan and a vision of how Aarhus will be able to optimise the harbour and, at the same time, create an architecturally significant central and local urban harbour space. As part of the Dokk1-project, the part of Aarhus Å closest to the harbour will be reopened.
