Danish Architecture Guide

Halmtorvet used to be dominated by through traffic, busses and goods transport, and so the aim of changing the layout of the square was to create a quiet and peaceful open space. Introduction of one-way traffic, closing down of roadways, new furniture and new paving have turned the square and Sønder Boulevard into a recreational oasis for all of Vesterbro.
In order to obtain a coherent space in the area a large gas regulator station straight in front of the plaza by Den Brune Kødby (The Brown Meat Market) was removed. Instead an oval pool was placed on the axis surrounded by large open spaces and playgrounds. These spaces and the roadway are covered with concrete flagstones, sett and cobblestone, which form a uniform surface.
